Technical Manual & Protocol for Secure Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Destruction and Degaussing

1. Introduction and Purpose

This technical report outlines the approved procedures for the complete eradication of data and the physical destruction of magnetic storage media (Hard Disk Drives – HDDs). The objective is to ensure the absolute non-recoverability of data in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 (Guidelines for Media Sanitization) standard.

2. Method: Physical Destruction

To achieve the maximum level of security (Sanitization Level: Destroy), we always need to do the physical destruction of the hardware.

3. Technical Destruction Methods

1. Shredding: The hard drive is fed into an industrial multi-shaft shredder. The hardware is ripped apart and reduced to small pieces of scrap.
2. Crushing / Piercing: Utilizing a hydraulic press that exerts several tons of pressure to bend the drive’s chassis and shatter the internal glass or aluminum platters.

4. Workflow & Quality Assurance

Professional recycling and data destruction companies adhere to a strict Chain of Custody:

1. Collection and Logging: Scanning the unique Serial Number of each hard drive upon receipt and linking it to the respective client.
2. Secure Storage: Placing the drives in locked, sealed security bins under continuous CCTV surveillance.
3. Execution of Destruction: Processing through the industrial shredder.
4. Issuance of a Certificate of Destruction: A formal legal document is issued, stating the date, the exact method used, and listing the serial numbers of all destroyed drives (if needed).
5. Material Recycling: The shredded remnants (aluminum, copper, circuit boards, plastic) are sent to specialized smelting facilities for full raw material recovery, minimizing the environmental footprint (E-waste management).
